The narratives we use to
interpret reality often hide more than they reveal. When we
attribute an event to a cause, it is often in order to ignore the
other factors that may have contributed. To every narratives, it
seems, there are facts that are unbearable.
But my purpose is not merely
to engage in relativism. Some of the most important facts of modern
life lie in the shadow of collective denial. Therein, we find the
injustice and brutality of work, the ecological emergency, and we
miss the values that have been lost.
These assertions should
still be qualified – it is not so much that we avoid talking about
work, about the environment or about values, but that this speech
almost systematically leads to anesthesia and paralysis. Nothing can
pierce the reassuring tranquility of the everyday. Conspiracy
theorists and social justice activists relieve us from our
responsibilities by designating a scapegoat, optimists reassure us
that qualified experts will take care of our problems, while
fear-mongers can only make us feel guilty for being passive.
This blog intends to make
visible the shadows we would like to ignore. It aims to distinguish
the acts which break our boundaries from those that only pretend to.
